Loughborough University / UK Finance Webinar Series

Understanding Cryptocurrencies and Digital Assets

Welcome. This page is the overview page for the series of three 45-minute webinars delivered by Loughborough Business School on cryptocurrencies and digital assets and their relevance and application in payments and wider financial markets.

These webinars are designed to give participants a sound basic understanding of cryptocurrencies and digital assets. The emphasis is on their application, not the details of their supporting blockchain and distributed ledger technologies.

Following the webinars, Loughborough will host a series of  roundtable discussions, providing an opportunity to explore these issues in greater depth and to discuss the application of digital assets and their supporting technologies in specific operational contexts.

Introduction by Rhiannon Butterfield, UK Finance

What makes these webinars different by Alistair Milne, Loughborough

Webinar one: An overview of crypto & digital assets. Thursday 26th October, 10.00-10.45. This first webinar is an introduction to crypto and digital assets and ongoing developments: the trading of cryptocurrencies and so called ‘decentralised finance’ (DeFi), the emergence of stablecoins and ‘tokenized’ securities, and the possible issue of central bank digital currencies (CBDC).

Webinar two: The governance and regulation of digital assets. Thursday 2nd  November, 10.00-10.45. The second webinar examines more closely the governance and regulation of digital assets; and how a different approach is necessary for: permissionless crypto trading on the one hand; and for the adoption of permissioned digital assets in mainstream finance on the other. It then discusses the prudential, financial crime and customer protection risks of digital assets and explores possible future regulatory regimes.

It compares digital assets to other innovations including open banking, the new payments architecture, artificial intelligence and digital regulatory reporting. It also looks at relevant supporting arrangements, such as digital identity solutions, and assesses the enablers and barriers to adoption of digital assets.
